This is one of my very favorite projects. It's based on an incredible human achievement created by many of my heroes including Carl Sagan. It speaks to space, curiosity, and the universe, representing the best that humanity can offer.
Everything started with a very "simple" question… How in the… do you honor a 40-year-old scientific masterpiece for today's audience? WeTransfer needed to reimagine NASA's Golden Record project in a way that would resonate with creative communities while supporting space exploration initiatives.
Rather than simply looking back, we reimagined what "The Golden Record" would look like today. The original Record was humanity's attempt to communicate across vast distances – perfectly aligned with WeTransfer's mission of creative exchange.
We gathered artists, musicians, photographers, writers, and scientists from across the globe to respond to themes of hope, determination, and goodwill – a contemporary echo of Sagan's original collaborative vision.

"A Message from Earth" brought together global creators to craft an interactive tribute that channels the Golden Record's optimistic spirit—showing how art can bridge cosmic distances.

The project began with a creative brief for our partner Stink Studios, outlining an interactive exhibition that would honor the original Golden Record while creating something relevant for today. During creative discussions, the opening scene from Mike Mills' film "Beginners" emerged as a key reference point – establishing the tone, pacing, and stylistic approach for the project.
"A Message from Earth" took shape as an interactive online exhibition built around the original Record's organizing principles. The exhibition guided visitors through curated chapters featuring international greetings, music, sounds, images, and reflections from contributors across 20 countries.
A limited-edition zine extended the experience, with all proceeds supporting the Carl Sagan Institute, SETI, and Astronomers without Borders.

The industry took notice too. The project earned recognition from the Webby Awards (Best Branded Editorial Experience), multiple ADC Cubes, One Show Merit in Digital Design, a D&AD Graphite Pencil, and featured spotlights on FWA and Awwwards. But more meaningful than the hardware was seeing Carl Sagan's spirit of cosmic curiosity connect with a new generation.
